First day back in the US after a great mini-vacation to Geneva for SIHH 2009.
첫날 SIHH 2009를 마치고 미국으로 돌아와 잠시 짧은 휴식을 마쳤습니다. 

아래는 제가 간단하게 메모하거나 AP 그룹의 PT를 보고 메모한 것인데, 들어가기전에 참고하면 좋을듯 하여 적어봅니다.
Some quick, random notes: 
* There remains a strong focus on the Offshore collection, however AP continues to be truly innovative at the very high-end. To me, it seems many collectors aren't aware, or perhaps don't realize just how great AP's high-complication watches are.
* I briefly met AP's new CEO, Philippe Merck. After talking with him and hearing his speech during AP's dinner cocktail on Tuesday night, he came across as highly intelligent, capable, friendly, and down-to-earth...I'm confident AP is in good hands.
* AP's showstopper, and my favorite new release of the show, was the Jules Audemars Watch with AP Escapement. More on this superb watch in just a bit...
* The black PVD-treated titanium Las Vegas limited edition Royal Oak Offshore will be a hit with Offshore fans.
* According to Giulio Papi, AP still intends to fit the wonderful AP escapement to all their watches in the future.

* Attendance at this year's SIHH: Press attendance down 40%; dealer attendance down 60%.
* Sales of AP watches have been strong through December, in spite of the tough economic climate.
* Revenue for 2008 was up 5% versus 2007.
* Revenue for 2009 is expected to remain the same as 2008...with less sales of watches.
* Production will be reduced in 2009. 29,000 watches produced in 2008. 25,000 planned for 2009.
* The average sale price will rise in 2009...2008's average price was $40K. $45K expected for 2009.

Jules Audemars Watch with Audemars Piguet Escapement

I was fortunate enough to sit in for a private, small group meeting with Giulio Papi for an overview of this year's new releases. He began by stating how this year, the Jules Audemars watch with AP Escapement is the brand's most significant and important new release. The discussion quickly got technical as he focused on the operation of the escapement, first used in 2006, describing several of the important innovations within it. Like a proud "father", his passion and excitement came across clearly throughout the conversation. He certainly should be proud, as it is both a single beat and direct impulse escapement requiring no lubrication. I personally believe it's the most precise mechanical escapement ever fitted into a wristwatch, and feel it's the most important horological innovation of the recent past. A little background from an article I wrote two years ago...

The Jules Audemars watch is an officially certified chronometer, and like the previous watches to use this escapement, is fitted with two hairsprings oriented 180-degrees opposite one another. The two-hairspring approach provides better timekeeping results than a single hairspring with Breguet overcoil. Unlike the first two watches that used this escapement, this version uses a screwed balance wheel instead of a variable-inertia type. When asked why, Giulio responded that the screwed balance allowed for more optimal and easier regulation for accuracy. Additionally, the watch beats at a very high rate - 43,200 oscillations per second - to enhance accuracy (in general, the higher the oscillation rate of an escapement, the higher the accuracy of a watch).

 쥴스 오데마의 시계는 공식적으로 크로노미터의 인증을 거칩니다. 그리고 이 무브먼트는 앞서 설명한 이스케이프를 써온 이전의 시계들과 마찬가지로 180도로 대립하고 있는 서로 다른 두 개의 헤어스프링이 장착되죠. 이 두 헤어스프링의 접촉은 브레게 오버코일이 장착된 한 개의 헤어스프링을 사용하였을 때보다 훨씬 더 정확한 시간을 보증합니다. 하지만 앞서 말한 두 종류의 시계들과의 차이점이 있다면, 전자는 가변 관성( variable-interea type ) 스크류를 사용하지만, 다음에 소개할 시계는 스크류 밸런스 휠을 사용한다는 점이 또 색다르죠. 기존의 것을 사용하지 않고 새로운 도전을 한 이유는( Giulio 에 의하면 ) 스크류 밸런스는 가변 관성 스크류보다 정확함을 위한 시간 조정에 용이하기 때문이랍니다. 정확성에 대하여 한마디 더 붙인다면, 이 시계의 비트는 꽤 높은 편이기에 기존의 무브먼트보다 신뢰도가 높다고 하였습니다. (43,200 비트) 

Giulio shared with us a print-out of the movement's COSC certificate, and without too much regulation effort, the watch had an impressive average rate deviation of just 1.1 sec/day over the course of the 15 day test. Giulio was confident that if more time was spent regulating the watch, the rate performance could be significantly improved.

An astute collector among our group asked the following question: "If you had to build the world's most accurate watch for a timekeeping competition, which escapement would you choose (e.g., Swiss lever, Swiss lever with tourbillon, co-axial escapement or the AP Escapement)?" Without hesitation, Giulio responded "the AP escapement, for sure!". I'd love to see such a competition!

이렇게 대화가 오고갈 즈음, 한 호기심 많은 우리 그룹의 컬렉터가 Giulio에게 "만약 Giulio씨가 세계에서 표준이 될만한 이스케이프먼트를 정해야 한다면 어떤 이스케이프먼트를 사용하시겠습니까?" ( 예를 들어 스위스 레버(이스케이프먼트 생략), 스위스 레버와 뚜르비용, 코액시얼 이스케이프먼트, AP의 이스케이프먼트가 있을 수 있겠죠.. ) 라며 질문했습니다. 그리고 이에 Giulio 는 한치의 망설임도 없이 "당연히 AP의 것이 기준이 되어야죠!"라고 대답했습니다. 나는 Giulio씨의 자사에 대한 자부심이 너무 좋았습니다. :-)  

The movement, caliber 2908, has two mainspring barrels providing up to 90-hours of power reserve. They're clearly visible from the dial side, and as they unwind throughout the day, the embossed inscriptions "Eschappement" and "Audemars Piguet" are cyclically displayed. The main timekeeping dial at 12 o'clock is made of true enamel. It's a beautifully open aesthetic with amazing finishing quality...I just wish it had a smaller diameter - the platinum case measures 46 mm!

무브먼트로 사용된 칼리버 2908은 두개의 메인스프링 배럴로 90시간의 PR을 자랑합니다. 그것들은 다이얼 한쪽에 잘 보이게 배치되어 있으며, 돋을새김한 Eschappement와 Audemars Piguet 역시 잘 뚜렷하게 잘 보입니다. 12시 방향에 위치한 다이얼은 에나멜로 만들었습니다. 이 시계는 전체적으로 놀라우리만치 정교한 피니쉬와 어우러져 유하함을 만들어냅니다. PT의 케이스는 46mm 입니다. ^^;

Named after the famed highway of Long Island, NY's prestigious Hamptons locale...another limited edition of 300 pieces. In stainless steel, it features powder-blue numerals hands and tachymeter scale, with brown subdials.

Please note, "Bumble Bee" is NOT this watch's official name. It's the first thing I thought of when I saw it, and it's how I kept referring to the watch for the duration of the show. A non-limited edition Offshore with a forged carbon case and black ceramic bezel. Another sharp-looking new Offshore.

Other Offshores

A new silver-colored dial with black numerals is available for stainless offshores, and an anthracite-colored dial with black numerals for titanium offshores. Both feature red hands.

은빛 색상의 다이얼과 검은 index는 SS재질의 오프셔에서, 무연탄 컬러의 다이얼과 검은 index는 티타늄 재질의 오프셔에서 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 이 둘의 공통점이 있다면 두녀석 다 붉은 핸즈를 사용한다는 것 입니다. ㅎㅎ







For lady's, the new Royal Oak Offshore Ladies' Chronograph features a 37 mm forged carbon case, ceramic bezel with a diamond-set steel insert...fitted with a rubber strap.

New Chronograph Watches

The new Jules Audemars chronograph, featuring a white or cream-colored lacquer dial. Available in 18 karat white or pink gold, its case measures 41 mm in diameter and houses the AP self-winding caliber 3124/3841 modular chrono movement (similar to the latest Offshore movements that are based on the cal. 3120, lacking a date complication). The style of the dial text, 2-registers, and spade hands give it a vintage look.

The Millenary Chronograph is new this year, featuring the self-winding caliber 2385 (based on the F. Piguet 1185). Definitely not my cup of tea...

Other New Watches

The "Tradition Collection", launched last year, introduces a new, time-only model. The case measures 47 mm in diameter, and is fitted with the AP caliber 2120. With ancient looking cathedral-style hands and a huge antique-style cushion case...I really dislike these massive "Tradition" watches. The only people I see them appealing to is older men losing their vision. I do like the strap, though. :-)

AP는 작년에 새로 개시된 트레디션 컬렉션 라인의 뒤를 이어 새로운 타임온리 모델을 선보였습니다. 케이스 직경은 47 mm에 AP 칼리버 2120이 들어가 있습니다. 고대 성당을 연상시키는 핸즈와 쿠션핸즈가 고풍스럽습니다. 저는 진심으로 (필자는 좋아합니다만.. - _-;) 이런 지저분한 "전통"시계를 싫어합니다. 이 모델에 관심있어하는 사람들은 원시가 되어가는 저보다 나이 많은 사람밖에 없었습니다.- _-;; 하지만 이녀석의 스트랩은 상당히 좋군요. (뭐야 ..이녀석 - _-;)

Jules Audemars Jumping Hour Minute Repeater - Skeleton

Using AP's caliber 2907 launched in 2007, the movement is a large, fully modern and innovative minute repeater. It features a large free-sprung balance, and is the world's only minute repeater that allows a wearer to set the time while the repeating mechanism strikes. This year's skeletonized version features an interesting GMT-strike complication, allowing the minute repeater to strike the time in a different timezone than indicated by the jump-hour window. A magnificent watch and among my favorite watches of the show.

 2007년에 소개된 AP 칼리버 2907을 사용한 시계입니다. 완전한 모던 디자인의 혁신적인 미닛리피터 모델입니다. 이 모델의 특징은 커다란 free-sprung 발란스라는 것 그리고 시계를 맞출 때 미닛 리피터가 작동하는 세계 유일의 시계라는 것 입니다. 올해 스켈레톤된 버전의 특징은 GMT를 설정하면 strike( 미닛리피터가 되는 )가 되는 컴플리케이션이란 것 입니다. 즉, 점프 아워된 다이얼의 시각과는 달리 미닛리피터는 이용자가 설정한 타임존에 맞게 작동이 가능하다는 것이죠. 이 위대한 시계는 SIHH에서 제가 가장 좋아하는 시계 중 하나였습니다.

The finishing quality is as good as it gets...just look at the bevels on the black-polished hammers...

또 폴 녀석은 이렇게 끊어버리네요 -  _-;;

뭐 어쩌겠습니까.. 이놈 스타일인걸... ㅎㅎ 필받아서 두개 달려봤는데.. 재밌기도 하고.. 힘들기도 하네요 ㅎㅎ 무브먼트에 대한 공부를 조금 해놓을 걸 그랬습니다. 직역하면서도 뭔소린지 도무지.. - _-ㅋ 저도 잘 모르는데 이 글을 같이 보시는 TF 회원분들에게 제 번역이 재대로 전달될지 모르겠네요 ^^;;
